About

Discover effective ways to improve literacy and language skills by guiding students to apply and transfer their learning to new situations, such as independent reading and writing, inquiry projects, and state tests. In this PD Webinar, Barbara Andrews, co-author of Small-Group Reading Instruction and former multilingual teacher and administrator, will guide participants through ways to develop diverse students’ abilities to participate in collaborative academic conversations and use what they have learned in different contexts.

This research-based webinar focuses on pathways and processes that enable K-8 students, including multilingual learners, to build knowledge, meet state standards, and improve their communication and thinking skills. You will learn how to:

  • Adapt or design lessons to increase understanding, and then show students how to apply their knowledge
  • Improve students’ abilities to sustain productive academic conversations by layering ideas and information
  • Teach speaking, listening, and metacognitive skills that enable students to learn successfully during group activities
  • Provide opportunities for students to demonstrate their mastery and transfer of targeted skills and strategies
